LG partners with 3M to Create most efficient air conditioner

LG Electronics recently joined forces with 3M, an innovator in filtration technology, to produce a highly efficient, cutting edge filter for air conditioners.

To this effect, LG’s latest residential air conditioning products offer exceptional cooling and heating performance, while also maintaining High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) standards as set by the United States Department of Energy (DOE)..

Hyung-ho Park, Principal Research Engineer at the LG Air Conditioning and Energy Solution Company explained that the Company has developed and released a range of air purifying technologies that have served to combat a number of dangerous airborne bacteria and even viruses such as H1N1. Yet, the challenge lay in applying the most sophisticated clean-air technologies to a residential air conditioning unit.

He added, “LG has spent a considerable amount of time and energy in developing new technologies that won’t negatively impact cooling performance.”

To achieve this goal, LG Electronics partnered with 3M, a leading market player in the US residential air filter market and advanced air filtration technologies. The end result was a development of a solution/ that protected the consumer from unhealthy dust particles; allergens and microscopic particles that can carry bacteria, viruses and unpleasant odors.

Today, the new filtration system within LG electronics AC units ensures a higher level of clean air without detracting from the powerful cooling and heating capabilities.

LG developed new functional substances to coat 3M’s new filter in order to improve bacteriostatic and anti-allergy functionality. One such substance was developed from kimchi, a traditional Korean food, as the bacteriocin from kimchi lactobacillus was found to have the capability to repel bacteria. The Company also added a new inactivated substance to repel allergens.

Tests performed by a number of third party organizations have proven the newly developed filter’s effectiveness at protecting the home against viruses and allergens, highlighting its ability to kill 99.9 percent of all airborne viruses including H1N1 within a 15-minute period.

The filter has also received certification from the respected Kitasato Research Center for Environmental Science. According to the Center’s tests, LG’s filter also sterilizes 99 percent of all airborne bacteria within 10 minutes. Additionally, the British Allergy Foundation (BAF) has certified this technology as being highly effective against common household allergens. The filter has even proven effective against germs that can lead to tuberculosis – one of the top three dangerous diseases listed by the World Health Organization (WHO).
