Khalifa University organizes Engineering Students Ethics Competition 2013
Khalifa University recently held the fifth Engineering Students Ethics Competition 2013 (ESEC2013). The event was sponsored by Emirates Advanced Investments Group (EAI) and held in cooperation with Khalifa University’s Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Student Branch.
The aim of the competition was to provide engineering students with the opportunity to demonstrate their appreciation of ethical issues and responsibilities. The prime objectives of this event were; to foster familiarity with the IEEE Code of Ethics and ethical concepts, to promote a model for discussing and analyzing ethical questions, to provide experience in applying ethical concepts to typical professional situations, and to enhance engineering students’ understanding of their ethical duties as professionals.
Ten teams from five major institutions in the UAE participated in ESEC2013. These were; Khalifa University of Science, Technology and Research (KUSTAR), UAE University (UAEU), American University of Sharjah, University of Sharjah and Ajman University of Science and Technology (AUST).
The first prize in this year’s competition was awarded to UAE University’s team 1 The second prize was awarded to Ajman University of Science and Technology’s team 1, and third prize was awarded to Khalifa University’s team 1 consisting of Mohammed Hitham Al Mnjed, Saeed Al Mannaee and Fatima Ahmed. The team was supervised by Prof. Saleh Al-Araji.
Dr. Arif Sultan Al-Hammadi, Khalifa University’s Executive Vice President, said: “This year’s event forms part of our continued commitment to ensure that we provide our students with that vital link between the theoretical knowledge gained at university and applied engineering situations. We believe that the challenges this competition provides will greatly assist students as they prepare to enter the job market after graduation, as well as help us to further develop the knowledge economy as envisioned in Abu Dhabi’s 2030 Vision.”
The panel of judges for this year’s competition consisted of Dr. Kahtan Ismail Aziz/Al Ghurair University, Chair, Dr Boutheina Tlili/ Rochester Institute of Technology, Dubai and Dr. Nawfal Mehdi/American University in the Emirates.
