DP World’s flagship Jebel Ali Port has marked World Environment Day by achieving two important international environment standards - ISO 14001-2004 for its Environmental Management System and OHSAS 18001:2007 for its Occupational Health and Safety Management System.

DP World, UAE region received the certification from Lloyd’s Register of Quality Assurance(LRQA).

Achieving the two standards is part of DP World, UAE region’s on-going environmental efforts. Jebel Ali Port has signed an agreement to install energy efficient terminal lighting that will result in savings of approximately 70% over the present lamps installed. Additionally DP World is conducting a programme to further reduce energy consumption at Jebel Ali Port by converting nine diesel powered rubber tyred gantries (RTG) to electrically powered systems in Phase 1 of a conversion plan for the fleet of more than 90 RTG’s. This will result in an initial saving of approximately 90,000 litres of diesel per month, decreasing CO2 emissions by 2.8 million kilograms a year.

Mohammed Al Muallem, Senior Vice President and Managing Director, DP World, UAE Region, said: “This is a significant achievement for Jebel Ali Port, the largest and busiest cargo hub in the region, serving the Middle East, Subcontinent and East Africa. We are proud to have achieved these two global standards, successfully meeting the stringent criteria for both.   We are committed to reducing the impact of our operations on the environment and to  ensuring we have a work environment that minimises health and safety risks to employees, customers and port users.”

Mohammed Ali Ahmed, Chief Operating Officer, DP World UAE Region, said: “The LRQA team spent an intensive five days in Jebel Ali port investigating the different departments related to the certification. Key to achieving the standards was the hard work and effort put in by each department and we congratulate all those involved in their success.  As we continue to maintain and improve our systems, we also continue to improve the way we protect our employees, customers and port users, and the environment.”

DP World, UAE Region, is celebrating World Environment Day 2012 under the theme “Green Economy: Does it include you?”. The celebration covers various events within the port, including an educational programme for employees.

Jebel Ali Port was the first port locally to get certified for Quality Management System ISO 9001:2008 in December 1996. The port’s pouch contains other four ISO certificates: The international standard for Customer Complaint Handling (ISO 10002:2004), General criteria for operation of various types of bodies performing inspection (ISO 17020:1998), Information Security Management System (ISO 27001:2005), and Security Management System certification achieved for implementing international security standards (ISO 28000:2007).
