Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, has been recognized by the Middle East retail community with the accolade of ‘New Vendor of the Year’ during the recently held Middle East Retail Academy (MERA) 2013 Awards. The brand was recognized in a highly competitive field for its exceptional work in forging new relationships with local partners, in turn building its reputation within the consumer electronics field as a global leader in mobile handset technology.

Today one of the world’s top five smartphone brands, the Middle East is seen as a core geography for Huawei’s emerging consumer electronics division with vast potential for additional market share. Essential to that growth has been a targeted effort in extending its retail presence through strategic agreements with telecom operators as well as building a more robust retail channel network.

Commenting on its latest recognition, Mr. Ashraf Fawakherji, Vice President of Huawei Device Middle East, stated: “It is a great honor to be recognized by the MERA 2013 Awards and by our colleagues working across the retail channel community. As a relatively new brand to the region, this award is testimony not only to Huawei’s vendor and channel strategy, but the great opportunities that exist within the Middle East in bringing unparalleled technology solutions to the local market.”

Part of the annual DISTREE Middle East event, the MERA 2013 Awards seek to identify the vendors that have successfully engaged with the retail channel and developed win-win partnerships in support of the Middle East’s overall retail sector.

While Huawei is still relatively new in the consumer electronics market, the company has quickly expanded its presence into some of the biggest retail outlets such as Carrefour,Lulu, Sharaf DG, Jacky’s, Plug-Ins, Emax, and more; now seen in around 100 outlets in the UAE alone. The brand also works with three service center partner including Al Sayegh Group, IMS, and Axiom to provide customer support to local consumers through nine service outlets.

Earlier this month, Huawei grabbed regional headlines with the unveiling of its latest series of premium smartphones including the Ascend P2—the world’s fastest 4G LTE smartphone—and the Ascend Mate—the world’s largest smartphone with a 6.1” screen.

Huawei’s most recent expansion within the Middle East has helped the company’s worldwide consumer business realize global sales revenue of $7.7 billion last year—an increase of more than 8% year-on-year—shipping more than 127 million devices.
