The General Organisation of Sea Ports (GOP), Bahrain’s maritime regulatory authority, has been shortlisted in the Port Operator/Authority category of the prestigious 2011 Lloyds List Global Awards. The awards which are designed to recognise excellence in the shipping industry will acknowledge the best port authority or operator that has maintained the highest standards of operational efficiency and customer service throughout the year. 

As one of six finalists for the award, the GOP has been nominated for demonstrating exceptional professional excellence of the maritime and shipping industry and offering quality services to meet the increasing needs of users and stakeholders alike. Being the shipping industries most acclaimed, credible and well supported event, the Lloyd's List Award winners will be announced at an awards ceremony scheduled to take place at the Hilton Park Lane, London, UK on 20 September 2011.

The GOP, as a regulator is responsible for supervising all maritime safety and environmental matters and ensuring adequate infrastructure is in place to serve the needs of the Kingdom’s seaports, including the region’s newest state-of-the-art port Khalifa Bin Salman Port (KBSP). As part of its ongoing strategy, the GOP, regulates and monitors the operations and performance of APM Terminals, the operators of the KBSP.

The judging panel for the awards comprises independent, senior industry experts from around the world, chosen for their knowledge, objectivity and credibility. This year the focus will be across many issues facing the maritime industry which includes safety, the environment, financing the industry and innovation throughout the shipping community.

The Lloyds List Global Awards 2011 cover major shipping disciplines under 12 categories including awards for best: Port Operator/Authority, Ship Operator, Amver Assisted Rescue at Sea, Safety, Training, Environment, Lawyer of the Year, Corporate Social Responsibility, Ship Financier, Innovation, Seafarer of the Year and Company of the Year.
