GEMS Education Schools host World Scholar’s Cup 2012

The region’s young scholars showcased their extraordinary academic skills and knowledge at the fifth edition of the World Scholar’s Cup last weekend. Running for the third consecutive year in Dubai, the Middle Eastern Round of the 2012 competition welcomed teams from Qatar, Bahrain, Kenya, Lebanon, and the UAE.
Hosted by GEMS Jumeirah College and GEMS World Academy, Dubai, the two-day event challenged participants – aged 12-18 years – to an essay-writing challenge, a debate and an examination round. On the second day of the competition, students participated in a taxing quiz challenge. Students prepared for the competition by studying material in science, the arts, literature, economics and the special area of the postmodern metropolis.
Sara Syed, Nicole Rodrigues and Anubhi Ghuwalewala from Cambridge International School were the winning team of the senior division, with Parizad Bidshahri from The Winchester School, Jebel Ali named as the best individual. In the junior division, the team award was taken by Arpine Jaghlasian, Anoushka Chowdhasy and Meher Malik of Emirates International School Jumeirah, with Meher Malik also taking the prize for top individual.
Background Information
GEMS Education
In 1959, two teachers, KS Varkey and his wife Mariamma, arrived in Dubai.
At the time, Dubai was a burgeoning trade centre on the Arabian Gulf. The Varkey family had left Kerala, India to seek a better life for their family. What they found was a real need to educate children arriving in the city from around the world.
Their son, Sunny, added a visionary’s ambition to a practitioner's experience. From simple roots in a family of teachers, GEMS Education, is today an international company with schools and education services across the Middle East. We still share the same mission - to provide a quality education to everyone.
