GAPP launches four new programs

Beginning in the fall, the School of Global Affairs and Public Policy (GAPP) will offer AUC students the region’s strongest and most innovative graduate programs in public affairs. GAPP will launch four new programs this semester including master’s programs public policy, public administration, and global affairs, and a dual Bachelor of Science/civil engineering public administration degree.

Characterizing the significance of the advanced academic offerings at GAPP, Jennifer Bremer, chair of the Public Policy and Administration department, cited the regional need for professionals who can manage emerging development issues. “Across the Middle East and Africa, leaders committed to development face tremendous challenges. They must find ways to accelerate growth, create jobs, guide the transition to a market-based economy, deliver vital social services, combat poverty, and manage complex internal and external pressures.  To do so will require professionals with specialized knowledge and skill sets.”

GAPP Dean Nabil Fahmy says the curriculum for the masters programs in public policy and public administration support evidence-based policymaking and better public governance by instilling analytical and communication skills.

He adds that the master of Global Affairs program exposes students to the skills and broad world views necessary to operate in a global environment. “The degree will offer two distinct concentrations that will allow students to focus on issues related to security such as conflict resolution and disarmament, or on international development challenges in the global environment,” said Fahmy.

Students enrolled in AUC’s School of Sciences and Engineering may apply to complete an MPA on an accelerated basis in conjunction with completion of the Bachelor of Science in engineering. “Many students have shown interest in the new combined BS/CENG - MPA program with GAPP, as it adds an important dimension to the engineering experience,” said Mohamed AbuZeid, chair of the Department of Construction and Architectural Engineering. “One characteristic element is the integration between engineering knowledge and the public work in a global context.  As such the graduates are more prepared to undertake tasks of wider scope that serve the community,” he added.
