Dubai Aluminium (“DUBAL”) and Emirates Aluminium Company Limited (“EMAL”) — the key players in the UAE’s primary aluminium industry – have again affirmed their commitment to developing the Middle East as a global aluminium hub, this time by participating jointly in the 15th International Arab Aluminium Conference and Exhibition (“ARABAL 2011”). The event, hosted by Sohar Aluminium, took place in Muscat, Oman, from 14 to 16 November. It attracted approximately 400 delegates from across the world, thus providing excellent opportunities to reach a high-level international audience.

DUBAL and EMAL used three key activities to promote the UAE aluminium industry: In keeping with the ARABAL 2011 theme – “Global Challenges for Sustainable Growth in the Aluminium Industry and the role of Gulf Smelters” – Abdalla Al Zarouni (Senior Manager: Technology Development) delivered a presentation entitled “DUBAL Technologies empower regional projects”. He showcased DUBAL’s advanced, high amperage reduction technologies – specifically DX and DX+ Technologies – that successfully address the growing need for lower energy consumption, reduced atmospheric emissions and improved productivity. Actual results were shared from the existing industrial installations of DX Technology (40 cells in DUBAL, 756 cells at EMAL) and the five pilot DX+ Technology cells at DUBAL (444 DX+ Technology cells will be built for EMAL Phase II).

A combined display stand in the exhibition held alongside ARABAL 2011 highlighted the benefits of DUBAL’s proprietary reduction cell technologies; as well as the two companies’ combined product portfolio. Together, DUBAL and EMAL will produce 1.8 million metric tonnes of hot, molten aluminium in 2011.

The two companies were the joint sponsors of the Arabian Nights Dinner for all ARABAL 2011 delegates, which took place on the evening of Tuesday 15 November.

DUBAL has been involved in the ARABAL Conference and Exhibitions since their inauguration in 1983; and is the first aluminium producer in the region to host four of ARABAL events to date: 1987, 1995, 2001 and 2008. The latter coincided with ARABAL’s 25th anniversary, giving DUBAL the rare privilege of hosting the silver jubilee year of this internationally-acclaimed event. EMAL participated at ARABAL for the first time in 2009. Both companies serve on the ARABAL Forum, a committee of representatives from the primary aluminium producers in the Gulf that is tasked with organizing the ARABAL events.

“ARABAL provides a key platform for promoting the Middle East aluminium industry as a whole,” comments Abdulla Kalban (President & CEO: DUBAL and Vice Chairman: EMAL). “With DUBAL and EMAL respectively being the largest and third largest primary aluminium producers in the region, our continued involvement in ARABAL is essential. Not only does ARABAL help focus the world’s attention on our region, but it also provides a great channel for achieving our corporate cause – especially our ongoing quest for new market opportunities for DUBAL and EMAL’s metal; and industry opportunities for DUBAL’s reduction cell technologies. ARABAL 2011 lived up to our expectations, as we successfully fulfilled our participation objectives.”
