Yesterday, the UAE telecom operator du, marked International Day of Older Persons with a visit to the Community Development Authority’s Thukher Social Club. During the visit, du employees engaged with senior citizens and hosted a number of activities, including a quiz competition, poetry recital, board games, exercise and more. This volunteering program is part of du’s commitment to actively working towards boosting its positive interaction between its employees and the community.

“Giving back to the community of the UAE is of utmost importance to us, and we are pleased to have been able to bring support and smiles to the senior citizens at the Thukher Social Club. Senior citizens are an important part of the UAE community and along with the theme of this International Day of Older Persons – Talent, we are thrilled to have contributed to helping them use and achieve new talents. At du, we are committed to supporting a number of volunteering initiatives that our employees can participate in throughout the year,” said Abdulwahed Juma, Executive Vice President Brand & Corporate Communications.

The theme of the 2017 International Day of Older Persons is about enabling and expanding the contributions of older people in their families, communities and societies at large. It focuses on the pathways that support full and effective participation in old age, in accordance with old persons’ basic rights, needs and preferences.

du fosters a strong culture of sustainability and volunteering amongst its employees; as an organisation giving back to the community is an integral part of du’s brand essence. Some of du’s regular charitable efforts include its annual Mawaed Al Rahman initiative in Ramadan. This year the telecom delivered a large number of volunteering hours to pack and distribute boxes of essential food ingredients to thousands of underprivileged families across the UAE. During the ‘Year of Giving’, du has also committed to a 2017 Volunteering Plan, where it will provide 10,000 volunteering hours of community service through its staff, of which it has almost already achieved.
