Dubai Properties Group, master developer of world class destinations in Dubai including Business Bay, DUBAILAND, JBR and Culture Village, has announced its partnership with DEWA to mark ‘Earth Hour’ 2014, the largest global environmental initiative aimed at raising awareness on climate change.

The master developer will host the event on March 29 in DPG’s central Business Bay district at the newly launched Bay Avenue Park. This year’s ‘Earth Hour’ event  will start at 5:00PM on the Bay Avenue promenade with a range of exciting activities for members of the public to enjoy including a laser projection show, educational workshops, and traditional performances. Representatives from the government, private sectors and ‘Earth Hour’ organizers will then participate in the symbolic ‘Earth Hour’ annual walk from 8:30PM to 9:30PM during which all Bay Avenue mall and Executive Tower lighting will be switched off.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Supreme Council and MD and CEO of DEWA said: “Dubai Electricity and Water Authority is committed to ‘Earth Hour’ in support of the Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to establish Dubai as a hub for green economy and the sustainable use of our precious natural resources. I call on all residents and organisations across the UAE to adopt energy efficiency in their operations to instill sustainability, for generations to come.”

Commenting on the importance of this initiative, Khalid Al Malik, GCEO of DPG, said: “As master developer of some of Dubai’s most iconic destinations and districts, we have supported the ‘Earth Hour’ initiative since its introduction in the UAE and are honored to host this year’s event in Business Bay. Our involvement, which is part of the company’s ‘Responsible Living’ platform, reflects our commitment to promoting energy and water efficiency not only during this evening, but on a daily basis. We encourage residents across the country to join us in raising awareness around climate change.”

DPG is encouraging all company employees and more than 200,000 tenants across its 15 residential communities including Shorooq and Ghoroob Mirdif, Layan and Al Khail Gate communities  to switch off unused lights and electrical equipment during this time.

‘Earth Hour’ will be held under the patronage of HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of Dubai Executive Council and in partnership with the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, Emirates Wildlife Society and World Wide Fund for Nature. Dubai was the first Arab city to participate in the ‘Earth Hour’ initiative in 2008 and has since then broken records of energy conservation and public participation every year.

The recently opened Bay Avenue Park is the first of its kind in the area and is located at the heart of Business Bay, within close proximity to the district’s metro station.
