The Iraqi government recently launched another internet service center in Baghdad, the 22nd center opened in the country, reported the official Xinhua news agency. Iraq’s Ministry of Transport and Communications has unveiled plans to expand the internet service to universities, colleges and companies.
In 2000, the Iraqi ministry inaugurated the first Internet cafe in Baghdad, offering Iraqi citizens, for the first time, an opportunity to surf the Internet and have an e-mail address. Baghdad blames UN sanctions imposed after Iraq's 1990 invasion of Kuwait for the delay in introducing the Internet and the difficulty in setting up a cellular phone network in the country, according to the agency. — (menareport.com)
