Motorola, a global provider of integrated communications solutions and embedded electronic solutions, was recently awarded a contract worth $23 million for the expansion of the Fastlink GSM mobile network operator in Jordan.

The Fastlink network has been in commercial service for five years, and has 100 percent network infrastructure supplied by Motorola's Global Telecom Solutions Sector (GTSS). The contract pertains to the multi-layer GSM network expansion, utilizing Motorola's Horizonsystems, GSM network solutions, for a wide area and focused on high capacity coverage.

Upon completion, the Fastlink network will have the capacity to handle over 250 million subscribers, providing enhanced coverage in advance of the expected demand for the new mobile data services, the Middle East wire reported.

Basem Rousan, CTO and director of engineering at Fastlink said: "Fastlink was the first GSM network in Jordan, and through our commitment to quality we have gained the confidence of a market enjoying spectacular growth. This new expansion takes us into the new century with a network designed to match and manage that growth."

Jeff Cherif, regional general manager for Motorola's GTSS, added: "Motorola and Fastlink have maintained an excellent working relationship, and we continue to be committed to providing Fastlink with the best support, service, and technology. This latest contract will strengthen and enhance the services of the Fastlink network."

Receiving another boost to its Middle Eastern presence, Motorola also recently was awarded a $28 million contract by MTC (Mobile Telecommunications Company), a Kuwaiti GSM operator, to implement network expansion and enhancement solutions for the dual band MTCNet GSM 900/1800 network, expanding capacity by 30 percent. — (Albawaba-MEBG)
