ALBAWABA – On Friday, Meta announced removing restrictions on former US president Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts.
This announcement came just in time before the Republican National Convention which is going to be held next week.
Why Meta restricted Trump's accounts
Meta stated how this decision was made to ensure equality between the current democratic president: Joe Biden and Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for the 2024 presidential elections.
Meta explained how they believe Americans should be able to listen and follow both candidates equally to be able to vote and express their political rights.

As a result, Meta restored Trump’s accounts on Facebook and Instagram after being restricted in 2021 amid the wide rejection movement that took place when Biden won the previous presidential elections.
Trump’s accounts on both platforms were banned for 2 years and Meta announced restoring his accounts back in 2023 but with some restrictions being imposed. The company announced removing these recent restrictions recently ahead of the Republican National Convention which is going to be held next week.
It is worth mentioning that Trump launched his own social media platform: “Truth Social” in 2022, following the restrictions he received on his Meta accounts: Facebook and Instagram.
