Mauritania and Japan have agreed to increase cooperation in fisheries development - a promising sector in the Maghreb desert country.
Delegates from a Japanese cooperation agency are currently visiting Mauritania to work with local authorities on identifying the best ways and means to make better use of Mauritania's sea resources, said official sources in the capital Nouakchott.
The Japanese delegation - headed by Dr. Kichiro Mori, general coordinator of a bilateral project to assess Mauritania's sea resources - has a program meant to "help the African country ensure better exploitation of its rich stocks."
A Japanese experts team is already working in this connection in Mauritania, whose long Atlantic ocean coasts harbor a great, but still under-exploited fishery wealth, sources in Nouakchott said. The coasts stretching over 780 km are among the world's richest.
Japan is active fishery cooperation with countries like Morocco and Mauritania. In Morocco, Japan finances several pilot fishery projects in several areas along the Mediterranean sea and the Atlantic. –(Albawaba-MEBG)
