Speaker Nabih Berri filed a lawsuit Monday against a man who was beaten by his supporters during a protest one day earlier after raising a banner accusing the official of corruption, the National News Agency reported.

The protester, Salah Mahdi Noureddine, was badly beaten by Berri supporters Sunday in Martyrs’ Square when he raised a banner bearing a slogan accusing Berri and two other politicians of “cruelty, corruption and theft.”

The banner showed images of Berri, MP Walid Jumblatt and former Prime Minister Saad Hariri.

The NNA said the speaker accused Noureddine of slander and defamation, as well as of “spreading false and deceiving information.”

Lawyer Hani Mrad announced on Facebook that he had filed a lawsuit against Berri’s supporters who attacked the crowds.
