Jordan: Growing commercial activity at Aqaba port

The volume of handling goods at Jordan's Aqaba Port increased by 8 percent over the first quarter of this year compared to the same period of last year.


According to Petra, Director General of the Ports Corporation Awad Maayteh said that 778 ships docked at Aqaba until the end of March compared to 674 in the same period of the year 2004, an increase of 15 percent. "The volume of goods that have been handled until the end of March stood at 5 million tons compared to 4.5 million tons over the same period of last year, an increase of 4 percent," Maayteh conveyed.


The volume of Jordanian imports until the end of last month stood at 2.7 million compared to 2.5 million in the same period of last year, or an increase of 9 percent.


Regarding transit imports, they dropped from 2.4 million tons to 2.3 million tons.


The Aqaba Port also received over the past period 7 tourism ships carrying more than 3,000 tourists.
