ALBAWABA – The Italian government announced the approval of building new nuclear plants in the country by 2025. The government appointed experts to draft laws for nuclear power legalization in Italy as well parliamentary committees.

New nuclear energy plans in Italy

Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, Minister of the Environment and Energy Security of Italy, announced that new nuclear power regulations will be issued by the end of 2024. These regulations will allow the use of nuclear technologies in the country by 2025.

It is worth noting that Italy is pursuing nuclear independence in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the need to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The government appointed a team to draft laws related to the new project and two parliamentary committees to examine and investigate the proposal.

Riccardo Zucconi, an Italian MP belonging to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's right-wing populist Brothers of Italy party said: “The inquiry is still ongoing. There hasn't been a clear or decisive indication on the matter yet. The creation of a new platform by the energy minister is significant as it maps the nuclear facilities that still exist both in Italy and across Europe,” according to Euronews.

However, public opinion on nuclear energy remains divided in Italy and across Europe. While a quarter of the EU’s electricity is generated from nuclear power, the approval for its use varies significantly.
