Iran seafood production goes up

Head of Iran's Fisheries Organization, Lotfollah Saeedi, said on Sunday that the country's seafood production will go up to 760,000 tons by the end of the fourth five-year economic development plan (2005-10).

 

According to IRNA, Saeedi conveyed that Iran's seafood production rose to more than 440,000 tons/year in 2003 from 32,000 tons/year in 1979.

 

He said per capita sea food consumption went up14-fold, prompting growth in the per capita consumption to 6.1 kgs in 2003 from just one kilogram in 1979. The figure is anticipated to further increase to about 10 kgs by end of the the fourth plan.

 

Iran has won some 60 percent of the exportable caviar in the region and the four other Caspian sea littoral caviar producing states have only 40 percent share in the total, added Saeedi.
