ALBAWABA - Germany is intending to provide Ukraine with further military assistance in the amount of around 400 million euros ($445 million) this year, despite a dispute on financial constraints, AFP reports citing a document from the German Ministry of Finance.
The funds are in adding to the approximately 8 billion euros that have been earmarked for Ukraine in the year 2024, with Germany being Ukraine's leading backer in Europe in regards to military assistance.
According to the letter that was sent to the parliamentary budget committee, the additional resources are required in order to "fulfill the German government's support commitments to the Ukrainian armed forces."
“In view of the continuously deteriorating military situation in Ukraine, there is a serious risk that Ukraine, without significantly increased material support, could be defeated in its defence campaign,” the letter reads, as reported by Reuters.
The unanticipated demand for around 397 million euros has just become apparent in the most recent few weeks, which means that it satisfies the constitutional and fiscal conditions of an unplanned need, according to the letter.
The proceeds will be deployed toward the purchase of a variety of goods, including but not limited to protective gear, drones, combat vehicles, and ammunition.
Based to the proposed budget for 2025, Germany intends to reduce its contribution to Ukraine to 4 billion euros. The government believes that Ukraine will be able to cover the majority of its military requirements with the $50 billion in loans approved earlier from the Group of Seven yields from frozen Russian assets.
