The European Union (EU) and Algeria initialed an association accord in Brussels on Wednesday, December 19, marking the finalization of bilateral talks that begun several years ago. The association accord will be formally signed next spring and will become effective after ratification by the parliaments of Algeria and the EU.

Signed as under the framework of the Euro-Mediterranean partnership program, which was initiated in 1995 between the 15 member states of the EU and the 12 Mediterranean basin countries, the agreement relates mainly to trade facilitation, but it also calls for closer cooperation in political dialogue, education, culture and the fight against crime, money laundering and terrorism. — (menareport.com)
