The Supervising Committee of the Dubai Light Rail Transport Project has invited tenders to bid for a 15 billion Emirati dirham (four billion dollar) contract that would establish the first metro in the region.

The committee met at Dubai municipal headquarters on November 2, 2003, to discuss plans for the routes, stations, power and communication systems. The project will be carried out in two phases, the first of which will be launched in June 2010 and the second in May 2013, reported Gulf News

The subway will have two lines, the first, called the Red Line will link the Sharjah border to Jebel Ali with 35 stations dotting its route. The second Green Line will run for 19 kilometers linking the Rashidiya Bus Station to the Dubai Healthcare City with 22 stations.
