Brussels-based DHL has built the complete logistics process that incorporated flying in the Antonov 225, the world's largest cargo plane, on its first ever landing in the Middle East, at the Bahrain International Airport.
The DHL-chartered aircraft, which arrived from Germany last week, is the only one of its kind in the world. Built in 1988, the 350-ton six-engined plane is 248 feet long with a wing span of 292 feet. Arranging for the complete logistics process of on-loading the 168-tons of transhipment humanitarian supplies, flying in the plane to Bahrain, off-loading and successfully transporting the shipment by road to Kuwait on 45 DHL trucks.
A DHL logistics expert oversaw the loading of the cargo in Germany, which took over 13 hours, and its off-loading in Bahrain, which took another seven hours.
DHL Worldwide Express was established in 1969, offering express deliveries in addition to e-commerce fulfillment and intelligent logistics solutions. The DHL network links over 120,000 destinations in more than 220 countries and territories, and employs 71,000 people. DHL is majority owned by Deutsche Post World Net.
