While the city of Zaweyat Kenta in the southern Algerian district of Adrar was recently filled with a tomato output surplus, tomatoes are still considered a luxury commodity in the northern regions of Algeria.
Al-Bayan newspaper recently reported that the per hectare tomato productivity amounted to 850 kentars in the southern regions.
The local farmers, who collected more than 2,000 tons of tomatoes this season from farms located outside the greenhouses, have refrained from collecting tomatoes over the past few days due to the lack of adequate storage and shipment facilities.
These farmers were concerned that if they had harvested extra tomato quantities, these tomatoes would eventually rot.
Thus, while southern Algeria is experiencing an excessive tomato surplus, the highly populated northern Algeria region is suffering from a tomato shortage that has pushed the tomato prices unreasonably high. — (Albawaba-MEBG)
