The Chinese tech company Baidu is preparing to launch its new artificial intelligence (AI) model, Ernie 5, in the second half of 2025, according to Reuters.

Sources indicate that Ernie 5 will feature advanced multimedia capabilities to compete in the Chinese AI market, including the ability to process and convert data between text, video, images, and audio.

Notably, Baidu is striving to excel amid the emergence of DeepSeek in the market, following the launch of its latest model, which competes with OpenAI’s ChatGPT in both performance and cost-efficiency.

Challenges facing Baidu

Baidu struggled to gain widespread attention following its launch in 2022, especially after the quick rise of ChatGPT. The company faced significant challenges in marketing its Ernie 4 model, despite it having features and capabilities similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT-4 model.

The ongoing competition in the Chinese market, particularly in the artificial intelligence (AI) field, is immense. Baidu is competing with major players such as ByteDance's AI chatbot Doubao and DeepSeek, the new, efficient, and powerful Chinese AI model.

Robin Li, Baidu CEO, stated at the World Governments Summit held in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, on Tuesday: "When technology is still evolving at such a rapid rate, you just cannot stop investing. You have to invest to make sure that you are at the very front of this technological innovation or revolution.”

Li stressed on the importance of investment in data centers and cloud infrastructure amid the continuous challenges and ongoing competition in the market. He also emphasized the need to reduce model costs and improve their efficiency.
