ALBAWABA - The social media platform Bluesky, which has been rapidly becoming an established name, is seeing a tremendous spike in popularity. According to CEO Jay Graber, the decentralized network gained around 1 million new users every single day over the course of the previous week, bringing the total number of users to over 20 million.

According to NYT, this increase demonstrates an increasing demand for alternatives to platforms such as Facebook and Threads from Meta and X (formerly Twitter) owned by Elon Musk. Bluesky's user base has more than doubled to over 15 million, while becoming the most downloaded free app on both the Apple and Google app stores.

Bluesky was first created as an invite-only app in early 2023 with scalability in mind. But its explosive growth has put its infrastructure to the test. The 33-year-old CEO Jay Graber recognized the difficulties of rapid expansion, such as technological issues and absorbing new users into the app's culture.

In an interview with CNN, Graber commented “We’ve been scaling up. There’s been about a million people joining a day for the past week, and we’ve just been telling people how it works, showing them how it’s different.”

In order to overcome these challenges, Graber has concentrated on improving the platform's capabilities, NYT reports. This involves adding tools that provide consumers more control over their experience by enabling them to design unique feeds based on certain subjects or demographics.

Bluesky has also strengthened its automatic content moderation capabilities, which are intended to detect and eliminate postings that are against company rules, including hate speech, harassment, and incitement to violence.

“A lot of people are saying they’re having a lot more fun here. They’re having an experience where they’re making friends online again and talking to people. That is just something that they haven’t experienced in a long time,” she added.
