Bahrain signed a $300-million contract with France's Alstom for the expansion of the Gulf emirate's largest electrical power and desalination plant, newspapers said Tuesday, September 11.
The contract was sealed by acting Electricity and Water Minister Abdulaziz Al-Fadhl and Alstom vice-president Peter Wollschlegel, Gulf Daily News said.
Alstom will install three steam generators, three gas turbines, and one steam turbine capable of producing 700 megawatts a day and the steam required for the desalination of 60 million gallons of sea water per day, as well as oversee the installation of two sea water pumps.
"The project is designed to boost the electrical generation capabilities in the country in order to meet the growth in demand for infrastructure development in the sectors of housing, industries and commerce," Fadhl said.
The plant, located in the northern Hidd region, will be completed by 2004 in three stages, he said. ― (AFP, Manama)
