Tenants are protesting over plans to raise rents for stall spaces at the Isa Town Traditional Market. But municipal council officials claim the tenants are raking in huge profits by sub-letting their sites for more than twice the original rent.

According to the GDN, traders who rent from the original tenants also sub-let to others, pushing rents up even further.

Official rents for plots at the market have not risen for 10 years, but tenants have dramatically raised the price they sub-let for, Central Municipal Council vice-chairman Ibrahim Fakhro told the newspaper.
