ALBAWABA - Incat Tasmania, the Australian manufacturer of high-speed catamaran ferries, has launched the world’s largest fully electric ship—Hull 096, a battery-powered vessel.

Incat Tasmania launched the project in partnership with Buquebus, a Uruguayan ferry operator providing services between Buenos Aires, Montevideo, and Colonia. The fully electric vessel, Hull 096, will operate on the River Plate, connecting Buenos Aires, Argentina, with destinations in Uruguay.

Notably, Hull 096 is approximately 130 meters long and can accommodate up to 2,100 passengers and 225 vehicles. The vessel features diverse technologies and is equipped with over 250 tons of batteries, providing an energy storage capacity exceeding 40 megawatt-hours—making it the most powerful marine electric system installed to date.

Additionally, the ship is powered by eight electric jet engines, delivering a power output four times greater than any previous installation in the field.

Robert Clifford, Incat’s chairman, stated: “We’ve been building world-leading vessels here in Tasmania for more than four decades, and Hull 096 is the most ambitious, most complex, and most important project we’ve ever delivered.”
