International telecom giant Alcatel will establish a branch in Muscat in a bid to consolidate its presence in the rapidly growing telecom and IT sector in the Sultanate.
A top official of the French-based telecom infrastructure provider said the company was also committed to developing the telecom and IT sector through the introduction of cutting-edge technologies and training of Omani nationals.
"As a sign of our confidence in the future of Alcatel in Oman, we have decided to open a branch in Muscat," said Vincenzo Nesci, Vice-President of Alcatel in the Middle East and Chairman of Alcatel Egypt. "We are currently proceeding with the legal steps to register a branch for Alcatel in Oman - a branch that will give continuity and significance to our presence, and also enable us to reach critical mass in our endeavour to play a key role in the IT and telecom sector in Oman," Nesci added in remarks to the Oman Observer.
Alcatel, which has operations in some 130 countries around the world, is a major supplier of fixed, mobile and Internet solutions to Omantel and Oman Mobile.
The company, along with OHI Telecom, is currently taking part in the COMEX 2005 Total Technology Show, which got under way at the Oman International Exhibition Centre Monday.
According to Nesci, Alcatel will explore opportunities for cooperation with local companies in the development of content and new applications for the newly emerging IT sector in Oman.
The 15th session of the telecommunications and IT exhibition (COMEX 2005) is organised by Oman International Trade and Exhibitions Company in cooperation with the Transport and Communications Ministry and Oman Centre for Investment Promotion and Exports Development (OCIPED).
A number of companies operating in the telecommunications and IT sector in the Sultanate sponsor the fair.
Several services relating to the mobile and fixed phone are on display in COMEX 2005.
