Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT), the Kingdom’s primary gateway to the shipping lines of the Red Sea and Levant, organized a celebration marking Jordan’s 65th Independence Day anniversary in cooperation with the Madrasati Initiative.

The event, which was held on June 2nd 2011 at the King Abdullah II School for Excellence, included all schools within the Aqaba governorate that fall under the support umbrella of the Madrasati initiative, including Al Shamilah School for Girls and the Saffiyah Bint Abdul Mutaleb School, which ACT officially sponsors as part of the initiative. The terminal’s support of the schools comes as part of its unwavering commitment to the local community and a reflection of its staunch belief in the importance of providing healthy educational environment where students can thrive and achieve their full potential.

In his keynote speech during the celebration, Soren Hansen, ACT’s CEO, underscored ACT’s dedication to developing and improving the local community, particularly in line with the objectives of Madrasati, explaining that ACT intends to adopt more schools under the initiative in the near future. Mr. Hansen also stressed the company’s commitment to participating in different national occasions and to share the joys and celebrations of the Jordanian people, serving as an active constituent in Jordan’s continued growth and prosperity.

Background Information

Aqaba Container Terminal

In 2003, the Aqaba Development Corporation (ADC), on behalf of the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, was on a mission to acquire a strategic partnership to improve the efficiency, capacity and the operational performance of the container terminal in Aqaba. After signing a Terminal Management Contract with ADC in 2004, APM Terminals (part of the global A.P. Møller–Maersk Group), took over the management and operation of the terminal.

A 25-year Joint Development Agreement (JDA) was signed between ADC and the Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT) in 2006. Under the contract, APM Terminals Jordan operates, manages and markets ACT in addition to executing the Master Plan, which anticipates achieving a drastic increase of throughput capacity through a combination of physical and operational improvements.
