Aqaba Container Terminal carries out a Greening Campaign marking Earth Day

Aqaba Container Terminal (ACT) - the Kingdom’s primary gateway to the shipping lanes of the Red Sea and beyond - re-launched its Greening Campaign to mark its celebration of Earth Day. The initiative demonstrates ACT continuing commitment to environmental sustainability.

The new phase of the Greening Campaign will plant 150 trees within ACT’s facilities, to contribute to reducing the impact of the CO2 emissions by the port’s heavy machinery operation. This initiative is a joint effort between private and public sector entities aim at providing safe and healthy environment to employees operating within the port’s facilities and the local community.

The Greening Campaign was launched in a special ceremony attended by HE Salim Almughrabe, who also planted a tree at the Terminal. ACT’s employees and guests have planted trees as a symbolic contribution to the campaign. ACT’s Greening Campaign was initiated in October of last year as part of its celebration of The World Safety Day.

“Planting 150 trees at the port is part of a holistic sustainability programme that aims at reducing our impact on the environment and providing better working conditions to our employees”, commented Soren Hansen, ACT CEO.

“What we have witnessed today is part of an aggressive trees planting programme to lower the carbon footprint impact from our operation, which demonstrates our values and commitment as citizens who take good care of the future of the planet Earth, to protect it for the coming generations. This campaign is in cooperation with our partner, ADC and supported trees by Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority, which will help us in achieving a wider impact to the entire Aqaba community”, added Hansen.

The Greening Campaign will not be exclusive to ACT’s port facilities; the company is planning to expand its environmental activities to reach schools sponsored by ACT as part of Madrasati initiative. The Campaign will include launching an environmental awareness programme at the schools within Aqaba governorate. This will educate students about the negative impact of CO2 emissions and informing them about the importance of waste management and recycling.
