The CISCO Entrepreneur Institute at ADU Enterprise, Abu Dhabi University’s Innovation and Entrepreneur Center, is geared up for ‘Starting a Business’, a training program which opened earlier this year and has already gained much attention from entrepreneurs and young applicants seeking successful self-employment. A third training program, running from June 15th to July 22nd, will provide a practical overview on how to set up and ensure success in operating a new business.

‘Starting a Business’ will address important considerations for a new business venture, including choosing the right type of business, and gaining a thorough understanding of legal requirements as well as the day-to-day operations of accounting, management and marketing. Subsequent formulation of a business plan will comprise of specific guidelines on how to carry out all these important functions of business.

Central to the workshop is a segment on reasons for business failure, and what entrepreneurs can do to avoid making these mistakes and falling into situations that are risky for their businesses. The workshop will also enable prospective entrepreneurs to evaluate favorable business potentials, determine the requirements of information and communication technologies, and decide on an appropriate organizational structure.

Rima Shaban, a Manager at the Innovation & Entrepreneurship Centre, said: “ADU Enterprise envisions a large community of knowledge-based businesses in Abu Dhabi, and encourages young entrepreneurs to seek the learning that contributes to the success of their business ventures. The Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centre at ADU makes this possible with specially designed training and mentoring workshops that lend value to the learning and experience of our graduates.”

There are other important processes and formalities that must be managed to formally establish a new business, including obtaining important licenses and permits, ascertaining the types of insurance needed, selecting the location and negotiating a lease, and financing the new venture by acquiring sufficient start-up capital.

A number of important decisions also pertain to the day-to-day functions of the business. These range from managing the business accounts and cash-flows, acquiring, training and motivating the right employees, developing a marketing plan and setting it in motion, and managing purchases and inventory control.

Lastly, the workshop will tackle questions on business expansion using tools such as online marketing and making the most of the Internet, looking into trade operations beyond the UAE, and appealing to foreign markets to ensure steady and sustainable business expansion.

The course will be run on evenings and over weekends, delivered at the ADU campus in Khalifa City, Abu Dhabi. Graduating students will receive certificates from the CISCO Entrepreneur Institute.
