Former legendary Egyptian actress Shadia has been symbolized as the official singer of the Egyptian revolution of 25 January, which she neither participated in nor supported.

The only statement Shadia made, during the mass protests that took place in Egypt to overthrow the government of former Egyptian president Husni Mubarak was a request to protesters to end the violence in the streets and return home.

According to the London based Elaph, Shadia retired from the entertainment industry 25 years ago, but her films and songs remain a huge part of Egyptian culture.

Shadia’s song “Ya Habeebti ya Masr” (Egypt my love) has been dubbed the official song of the revolution and is being played at event across Egypt to celebrate the success of the revolution.

Despite her personal feelings about the revolution, Shadia has not been placed on the black-list of artists to be boycotted that was created by protesters.
