Scenes from the television drama “Souq Al Waraq”(Paper Market), starring prominent Syrian actor Basil Khayat, have created a commotion in Damascus University. The controversial scenes depict unethical actions by the university’s administration, and the college of arts of Damascus University has sent a complaint to the dean, charging that the scenes in the drama tarnish the university’s reputation.
Despite the opinion of
officials at the university, the drama is witnessing large numbers of viewers,
comprised of mostly college students.
Writer of the drama Ara’ Jarmani, who is currently working on her dissertation for a doctorate degree at Damascus University, was threatened that she may not be permitted to give her dissertation in Arabic language studies at the university.
The drama stars a number of Syrian stars, like Makseem Khaleel, Marah Jabir, Saloum Haddad, and Abd Al Hadi Al Sabagh.
