Fernando Torres is certain Chelsea have what it takes to go all the way and win the Premier League this season having helped the Blues beat Arsenal.
The west Londoners travelled across the UK capital to face the Gunners in a match that they knew could reveal how the campaign will go. Despite their Champions League success Chelsea’s domestic form last season was dodgy in the extreme. The Stamford Bridge outfit ended up in sixth - not bad for most sides, but absolutely disastrous for a team with Roman Abramovich’s billions.
However, having won away against an Arsenal outfit who’ve looked good so far this season Torres is sure the Blues under Roberto Di Matteo can reclaim the title they last won back in 2010.
“For us to win against the top teams is very important,” the Spanish striker said.
“That was the reason we didn’t finish in the top four last season. This was our first big test and we have got the points.”
Torres got the first goal at the Emirates that sent the visitors on their way to victory, with Juan Mata netting the other as Chelsea continued their unbeaten run.
Both Chelsea goals came as a result of Mata free kicks with Torres benefiting from some poor defending by Laurent Koscielny to volley the European champions ahead in north London after 20 minutes.
Gervinho equalised for Arsenal three minutes before the break when he turned crisply and fired into the roof of the net for his fourth goal of the season.
Chelsea, who started with John Terry as he mulls an appeal over a four-game ban for racist abuse, regained the lead after 53 minutes when Mata’s free kick eluded everyone before clipping Koscielny and flying in past Arsenal keeper Vito Mannone.
Of his own display, Torres claims he getting close to finding the sort of form that persuaded Abramovich to part with $80 million 20 months ago.
“I always aim to improve. I had a very difficult start at Chelsea but I am enjoying the present and we are building a big team,” he commented. For Arsene Wenger the defeat proved to be hugely disappointing.
“I am deeply disappointed,” the Arsenal boss said. “We gave two cheap goals away, they had three shots on goal and scored two goals. It is unacceptable to give goals like that away.”
