Liverpool has reached a significant agreement with Newcastle United for Swedish international striker Alexander Isak. The fee is set at £125 million, which could increase to £130 million with additional payments.

Sources close to the talks told BBC Sport that the deal is now finalized. The 25-year-old is expected to have a medical on Monday before signing a six-year contract at Anfield.

The End of a Long Negotiation

This agreement wraps up a lengthy transfer saga that has grabbed headlines all summer. Liverpool's first offer of £110 million was rejected in August, but they kept pushing to land their main target.

The situation intensified when Isak was left out of Newcastle's squad, missing their first three Premier League matches, including a 3-2 loss to Liverpool at St. James' Park, which added to the tension.

The drama peaked last month when Isak made a surprising public statement saying promises had been "broken" by the Newcastle management and that the "relationship can't continue." Newcastle countered this by saying that "no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex can leave."

The Numbers: Where the Deal Stands

When finalized, this transfer will break the British record, previously held by Enzo Fernández who moved from Benfica to Chelsea for £107 million in 2023.

Globally, Isak's transfer will rank as the third-most expensive ever, based on the initial fee, surpassing the transfers of Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembélé. It will only trail Neymar's £200 million move to PSG and Kylian Mbappe's £165.7 million transfer to PSG.

Liverpool's Summer Spending Spree

The signing of Isak is not an isolated case; it is a standout move in a transformative summer for Liverpool. The Reds have already broken their club record by acquiring German attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for an initial fee of £100 million.

Along with Wirtz and Isak, the club has strengthened its squad with important additions like wing-back Jeremie Frimpong, goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, and striker Hugo Ekitike.

The club's total spending this window, not including future add-ons, is around £416 million, demonstrating a bold and ambitious intent from the Anfield management.

Signing Alexander Isak is more than just an addition to the roster; it is a strong message from Liverpool. It clearly communicates to rivals and fans that the club is entering a new era of ambition, supported by substantial investment, and aims to reclaim its status at the top of English and European football.
