Over 400 Entries for 3rd Doha Triathlon

The third Doha Triathlon is all set to take place at the MIA Park on Friday with more than 400 participants from various countries expected to be the part of it.

Professor Nasser al Mohanadi, Qatar Triathlon Federation Vice-President; Jamal al Kuwari, Qatar Triathlon Federation General Secretary, Thani al Zaraa, Qatar Triathlon Federation Deputy General Secretary; Marouf Mahmoud, CEO, Tasama Sports Development and Nasser al Ansari, representative from Qatar National Tourism Council, were present at a press conference and shared the details about the event.

The federation is encouraging Qatari nationals to compete abroad and inviting them to join the Qatar National Championship event to form a strong team. The Qatar National Championship will be the first event to start in the morning at 6:00 with the standard/Sprint distance 750m swim, 20km cycling and 5km run. It is a drafting race while all the other races in the morning are non-drafting.

The event also comprises Sprint, Olympic and Super Sprint distances as well as a Kids Fun Duathlon. The swimming will be in the bay of the Museum of Islamic Park, with cycling alongside the Corniche, before returning to the park for the final run in the park’s green spaces. The prize ceremony will be near Richard Serra sculpture at the end of the Bay at 8.15am and the public is invited to come and cheer the participants as they race and receive their medals at the prize ceremony.

One side of the Corniche road from the Museum of Islamic Art to Sheraton will be closed due to the races between 4:00 am and 10:30 am.

The Doha Triathlon is one of the biggest triathlon events attracting international athletes from all over the world. This year, Oman, Kuwait, France, Romania, Spain, the US and the UK are the countries which are sending more than 400 participants. Due to requests pouring in, the deadline for entries was extended and it closed on Tuesday midnight.

The Doha Triathlon is also part of the Qatar National Series ranking system for local athletes. The series consists of five events located in Katara, Al Ghariya, Doha, Losail and The Pearl-Qatar. The number of triathlon events has almost increased since last year and triathlon is becoming a popular sport with young children entering through Duathlon competitions. One of the characteristics of triathlon is the swim in open waters which is ideal during winter in Qatar.
