Manchester City are reportedly gearing up to go head-to-head with Real Madrid in the race to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s rising star, Florian Wirtz, during the upcoming summer transfer window.
The 21-year-old attacking midfielder is regarded as one of Europe's most promising young talents, having developed into a key figure under the guidance of Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso.
Man City vs. Real Madrid – The Battle for Wirtz Begins
Wirtz, a 29-cap Germany international, has already racked up 56 goals and 62 assists in 187 senior appearances for Leverkusen. His standout performances last season earned him the Bundesliga Player of the Season award after netting 11 goals and providing 12 assists in 32 league matches. His contributions played a crucial role in Leverkusen’s historic Bundesliga triumph, DFB-Pokal victory, and unbeaten domestic campaign.
This season, Wirtz has continued his stellar form, scoring 15 goals and delivering 12 assists across 35 appearances in all competitions, including 9 goals and 10 assists in 22 Bundesliga outings. His performances have put him firmly on the radar of Europe’s elite clubs.
Guardiola Eyes Wirtz as De Bruyne’s Successor
According to recent reports, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola views Wirtz as his "dream replacement" for club legend Kevin De Bruyne this summer.
De Bruyne, who turns 34 on June 28, is nearing the end of his current contract, and there are no clear indications that he will extend his stay at the Etihad.
City have already begun reshaping their squad, investing around £180 million in January on four new signings – Omar Marmoush, Nico Gonzalez, Abdukodir Khusanov, and Vitor Reis. The club is expected to continue spending big this summer, with Wirtz now emerging as a top priority.
However, according to The Sun, City will face stiff competition from Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid, who are also keen on securing Wirtz’s signature. Reports suggest that while both clubs admire the talented playmaker, Wirtz currently favors a move to the Santiago Bernabéu.
What’s Next for Wirtz?
Wirtz remains under contract with Leverkusen until 2027, and head coach Xabi Alonso has reiterated that the midfielder is happy at the club. "He's enjoying his time here. He wants to stay and continue playing for Leverkusen," Alonso stated.
Leverkusen’s sporting director Simon Rolfes also emphasized the club’s stance, saying: "His contract situation is straightforward – we have him under contract until 2027, and of course, we want him to stay as long as possible."
As speculation continues to swirl, Wirtz himself appears unfazed, telling reporters: "You'll hear something in due time. Right now, I’m just focused on playing and developing."
For now, Wirtz remains an integral part of Leverkusen’s squad as they push for further success, but with Manchester City and Real Madrid circling, his future could take a dramatic turn this summer.
