A proposal to allow football players to wear heart monitors will be considered by the group that oversees the rules of the game, officials said.
The International Football Association Board said it would formally discuss the idea at an upcoming meeting in Scotland.
The proposal came from the Scottish Football Association and would involve a computer chip sewn affixed to a player's jersey.
The chip would transmit real-time data about the player's heart activity during a match to a laptop computer monitored by medical personnel and coaches.
The BBC said the rules currently prohibit electronic communications between players and coaches during games; however, the head of the Scottish association, Stuart Regan, said the monitors would be a significant step forward
in protecting the health of players.
