World No. 8 David Ferrer has confirmed his participation at the eighth Mubadala World Tennis Championship (MWTC) in Abu Dhabi between December 31 and January 2.
The Spaniard, who recently secured his milestone 25th ATP World Tour title at the Malaysian Open, will battle it out with other leading players at the International Tennis Centre at Zayed Sports City.
Ferrer’s last appearance at the UAE tournament saw him finish runner-up to Novak Djokovic in 2013.
The Spaniard will join former world No. 1 Rafael Nadal and the big-serving Canadian Milos Raonic at the tournament. Three as-yet-unnamed players will complete the line-up at the annual exhibition event.
Approaching his fifth Abu Dhabi tournament, Ferrer enjoyed a successful start to 2015, securing a 22nd ATP World Tour title in Qatar. He went on to secure back-to-back wins in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Acapulco, Mexico.
Most recently, Ferrer was crowned champion at the Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur earlier this month.
Commenting on his return to the UAE capital, Ferrer said: “It is always such a pleasure to come and play this tournament, there is always a lot of excitement in the crowd and the set-up in Abu Dhabi is world-class. I am excited to get the season under way.
“The players are always very strong, so I know exactly what I can expect this year: tough, fast and exciting tennis. I know Rafa and Milos will set the standards very high and it’s certainly looking like one of the most competitive tournaments yet.
“In front of the packed stadium in Abu Dhabi with a great atmosphere, it’s going to be great for the fans and the players.”
