The Disciplinary Board of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), on Wednesday, declared Esperance de Tunis winners of the 2018-2019 edition of the CAF Champions League after the abandonment by Morocco’s Wydad Athletic Club of the second-leg final on May 31 in Rades.
"The WAC is considered to have lost the game in the Final 2nd leg, a fine of 50,000 USD (Fifty Thousand US Dollars) is imposed on the club for the abandonment of the match and a fine of 15,000 USD (Fifteen Thousand US Dollars) is imposed for the use of flares by the fans," CAF said in a statement.
The meeting of the Disciplinary Board of the CAF follows the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) which annulled last Wednesday the decision taken by the CAF Executive Committee to replay on neutral ground the second-leg final of the CAF Champions League between EST and WAC.
The CAS concluded that the CAF Executive Committee did not have jurisdiction to order that the second-leg final be replayed and decided to annul the decision challenged.
"Mr. Hamdi Meddeb, President of Club EST has been fined 20,000 USD (Twenty Thousand US Dollars) as well as receiving a warning for his unsporting behavior against the President of CAF," said the same source.
The club EST is fined with 50,000 USD (Fifty thousand US Dollars) for the use of smoke and projectiles and the unsporting behavior of their supporters, the disciplinary board also decided.
It also ruled that EST will play their next two (2) home interclub matches behind closed doors for the excessive use of smoke and firecrackers. However the Disciplinary Board has decided to suspend the sanction in question provided that the club is not found guilty of a similar offense for the next twelve (12) months, Tunisia's National News Agency (TAP) reported.
