Douz hosts first edition of camel racing

The first edition of camel racing, aka mehari race, is set for December 30-31 in Douz, southern Tunisia, with the participation of Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Sudan, Jordan, Egypt and France .

The event seeks to promote and confer an international dimension on this traditional sport, organisers said.

Races over a distance of 1,700m to 3,400m are scheduled on the first day; a 42 km marathon is on the agenda of the second day with folk shows and a lecture on " Camels, Ships of the Desert," Director of this first edition Ahmed Abdelmoula told TAP.
