A record number of over 2,400 participants took part in the sixth edition of the Ooredoo Doha Marathon, in the presence of Minister of Youth and Sports HE Salah bin Ghanem bin Nasser al Ali and Chairman of Ooredoo Sheikh Abdulla bin Mohammed bin Saud al Thani, on Friday morning.
The marathon was set along the Corniche and Doha skyline and offered the competitors the chance to win a range of prizes based on categories, age and gender. Ooredoo, in partnership with Qatar Tourism Authority, invited international athletes to take part in a special 'Elite Category' with a prize of $50,000 up for grabs.
Athletes included multiple Olympic gold medallist Sir Mo Farah, winner of the Great Scottish Run in 2017 Chris Thompson, Germany's marathon record holder Arne Gabius, Turkey's two-time Olympian Bekir Karayel, Michael Shelley, the 2014 Commonwealth Games marathon champion, Gemma Steel, European Cross-Country Champion, and more.
Over 2,400 runners took part in the event from 83 nationalities and the winner of the full marathon (42k) male was 27-year-old Chebii Collins Kiptarus from Kenya (time: 2:16:22) and full marathon (42k) female was Rokhsareh Ramezani, 29 years, from England (time:2:24:06).
As for the half marathon (21k), the winner of the male category was Kenyan Alex Kibet, 27 years (time: 1:01:53) and the female category was Allie Kiefer from the USA, 31 years (time: 1:10:40).
Speaking about the event, Waleed al Sayed, Chief Executive Officer, Ooredoo, said:"We're delighted with this year's marathon turnout, which not just included runners, but hundreds of spectators cheering on their loved ones and our 'Elite Category' runners.
