FIFA president Joseph Blatter on Friday called for solidarity among the global football community, two weeks before he seeks re-election atop the governing body.
"This is how we must go forward together: showing solidarity with each other ... Those who have more give to those who have less," Blatter said in a letter to the 209 member federations, titled "together" and published on the FIFA website.
"Football is more than just a simple game - it gives hope, it unites people and it builds bridges, even in difficult situations."
Blatter, 79, said "I am aware that there is still work to be done in various areas" ranging from the promotion of the women's game to the fight against discrimination, racism and manipulation, and consolidating the relationship with sponsors.
"We ca, and we must, play a role on the global stage, so let us do so - together. For the Game! For the World! For FIFA!" the Swiss said.
Blatter seeks a fifth term as president in a ballot at the FIFA Congress on May 29. Jordan's Prince Ali bin al Hussein, Luis Vigo of Portugal and Dutchman Michael van Praag are the other candidates.
