Bayern Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge backs UEFA president Michel Platini to head football's world governing body FIFA.

Former France international Platini "has a talent: he can bring people together," Rummenigge told dpa in an interview.

FIFA president Joseph Blatter will stand down from crisis-hit FIFA at an extraordinary congress on February 26 in Zurich.

So far Platini, Prince Ali bin Al-Hussein of Jordan and South Korean Chung Mong Joon, a former FIFA vice-president, are standing for election.

FIFA has been hit by various corruption allegations over the past years and seven football officials were arrested in Zurich on May 27 as part of a US probe. Swiss authorities are also investigating the 2018 and 2022 World Cup votes in a separate probe.

In May, 14 people including nine former football officials and five sports marketing executives were indicted on racketeering charges in the United States involving more than 150 million dollars.

Rummenigge said it was important to restore confidence in FIFA.

"I would have confidence in Michel (Platini) being able to reunify the football world. He will have to bring in reforms, but the first step has to be that he becomes president," he said.

Although head of the European Club Association (ECA), Rummenigge rules himself out as a possible future head of UEFA and said he had no interest in heading a football federation.
