Ajax player Abdelhak Nouri has suffered "serious and permanent brain damage" after collapsing on the pitch during a pre-season game, the Amsterdam club said Thursday.

Nouri, 20, collapsed with heart rhythm problems during Saturday's game against German Bundesliga club Werder Bremen in Austria. He was reportedly resuscitated before being taken to hospital in Innsbruck.

"Ajax are deeply saddened by the news that Appie Nouri has been diagnosed with serious and permanent brain damage. Our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his loved ones in this difficult time," Ajax tweeted.

Ajax said Monday that his heart was functioning normal but that he remained in an induced coma.
