When MBC's The Voice hit TV screens across the region earlier this year, no one knew quite what to expect. The Middle East already has its fair share of talent shows with 'Idol' and 'Got Talent' raking in the ratings but makers of The Voice promised that this competition would bring something new to the table.
Aimed at people with genuine musical talent, MBC promised that this was more than just your average Friday night singing competition. But with three phases to the show, from blind auditions to the battle round and the final live stage, some talent show fans were left baffled before the contest even hit the air.
However, as producers had expected, it didn't take long for the talented wannabe singers and superstar coaches to win over the Arab hearts and minds.
Ladies in the region were left swooning over hunky male coach Kazem Al Saher, while Saber Al Rubai brought on the laughs with his weekly dose of whacky antics. Not short of a fan or two before the show, Assi Helani is now the flirtatious favorite of women across the Arab world. And not to be outdone by the male coaches, Sherine Abdel Wahab managed to dish up a healthy dose of drama every week, even throwing in an embarrassing fall for good measure.
Tears and tantrums ensued as wannabe stars were sent packing. But the real drama on The Voice could be found off-stage.
Nothing gets the rumor mill in swing like a talent show and in its opening season The Voice set gossipers' tongues wagging with talk of secret feuds, favoritism, cheating and…Sherine.
But when the winner was crowned on Friday night, the gossip was forgotten as all eyes and ears were on the Arab world's newest 'voice'.
