8 Important Historical Palestinian Monuments Destroyed by Israelis

Palestine is the home to the world’s holiest city and to many unique archeological and historical sites that are witnesses of the rich past and civilizations that crossed through Palestine throughout centuries.  The continuous attacks of the occupation forces on Palestine didn’t only take the life of many Palestinians, destroyed their houses and dislocated them, it also destroyed many important archaeological and historical sites. Here is a list of 8 sites that were destroyed by Israeli attacks.

1. The Moroccan Quarter in the Old City of Jerusalem

1. The Moroccan Quarter in the Old City of Jerusalem: on June 10th, 1967 the Israelis invaded and demolished the Moroccan neighborhood in old Jerusalem, located adjacent to the Al-Aqsa Mosque from the southwest. Theydestroyed 135 ancient historical monuments built during the Ayyubid, Mamluk and Ottoman periods, including the Bethel School, the Shrine of Sheikh Abd, and the Zawiyat al-Mughrabi and displacing by force about 150 Palestinian families who used to live there. This neighborhood became an arena in which Jews perform religious rituals at the western wall of the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

2. Khirbet Umm al-Jamal

2. Khirbet Umm al-Jamal: On February 27, 2015, Israeli forces destroyed “Khirbet Umm al-Jamal” historical site, dating back to the Roman era, located on the lands of the town of Al-Eizariya, east of occupied Jerusalem. This site was one among many other monuments destroyed back then, including the remains of an archaeological building, tombs, wells, presses and ancient walls.

3. The archaeological site of "An Nabi Zakaria" translating (The Prophet Zechariah): In January 2018, The Israeli forces destroyed this ancient Arab archaeological site located on a hill, known as "The Prophet Zechariah", north of occupied Jerusalem.

4. The historic Shepherd Hotel building in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood: The hotel was destroyed by the Israeli forces on January 9, 2011. The purpose of the destruction was to build 20 settlement units on the same site.

5. Al-Mahkama Mosque:

5. Al-Mahkama Mosque: It was one of the ancient mosques in Palestine, and it was located in the Shujaiya neighborhood, east of Gaza City. This mosque was established in the ninth century and was initially a school established by Prince Burbak Al-Dudar in 859 AH during the days of King Al-Ashraf Abu Al-Nasr. The school was then turned into a judiciary court. The Israeli warplanes completely destroyed it during its war on the Gaza Strip in 2014.

6. Al-Zafardari Mosque

6. Al-Zafardari Mosque: It was one of the most prominent archaeological and Islamic landmarks in Gaza Strip, located on the outskirts of the Shujaiya neighborhood, east of Gaza City in Palestine. Its history spans over centuries, from the Mamluk era to the present days. Established by the Mamluk Prince Shihab Al-Din Ahmad Al-Dhafurdumri, Al-Zafardari Mosquen consisted of two parts, a modern one and an ancient archaeological one housing the remains of 3 iwans. The mosque was completely destroyed by the occupation warplanes during their war on the Gaza Strip in 2014.

The shrine of Khalil al-Rahman: The Israeli bombings and airstrikes on Gaza Strip in 2014 caused damage to the mosaic floors and the walls of the Ibrahim al-Khalil’s shrine, which is located inside the Khalil al-Rahman mosque in the Abasan district in Khan Yunis governorate in southern Gaza Strip.

Al-Khader shrine in Deir al-Balah, south of the Gaza Strip: Maqam of Al-Khader which is located in the city of Deir Al-Balah, south of the Gaza Strip, dates back to the Greek era, according to the inscriptions and texts found in the place. It was completely destroyed by the Israeli forces during their war on the Gaza Strip in 2014.
