Siemens to display full spectrum of CO2 neutral stadium solutions in Qatar

During the “Stadium Design and Development Summit 2011” in Qatar, Siemens demonstrates the latest technologies – from lighting, building and safety solutions for stadiums to intelligent traffic management systems for the surrounding areas – and gives an outlook for future social behavioral changes and its implications on related infrastructure and technology.

Siemens provides complete infrastructure solutions for major events around the world. All these infrastructure solutions are tailored to the requirements of each hosting country. Siemens’ contribution to previous World Cups in Germany or South Africa covered building technologies such as fire and safety technology, video surveillance, lighting / floodlighting and access control systems. The company also supplies energy generation and distribution including smart grid technology, water technology and health care systems. Also mobility solutions such as high speed rail, metro and light rail and airport infrastructure systems up to traffic and parking management systems provide better life for cities involved.

As Thomas Brodocz, Vice President Corporate Development Siemens One, International Projects, pointed out during his presentation at the Stadium Design and Development Summit 2011: “Different stakeholders around big sports events have different expectations and specific requirements. The fans are looking for more entertainment and information; the investors need a strong concept for the use of the sport venue – especially after the major event is over. Where the operator wants to have low operational costs, the clubs who will take over the stadium may be more concerned with what is best for comfort.”

One of the major trends hosting events such as the soccer World Cup is the environmental friendly use concept, developing concepts that combine power, efficiency and environmental protection. One example which was presented during the summit’s days could be central cooling concepts, avoiding thousands of local coolers through one bigger unit, using solar energy.

The solar energy available in this region can be used effectively to generate power for large-scale events. Concentrated solar power plants can feed electricity to the general grid, and produce steam for air conditioning and drinking water supply in nearby cities or event venues. This technology can be supplemented with photovoltaic systems installed on the roofs of parking shades and other buildings connected with the stadiums.

Along with state-of-the-art and long-lasting building material for the architectural structure, the fully aligned technical concepts and technologies of a sports venue will have a considerable impact on the investment, its operations and for the overall city’s ecological footprint. With about 50 technical subsystems and about 80 interfaces to realize and manage, a sports venue presents a complex building which by far exceeds other commercial structures.

Intelligent solutions from Siemens, equipped with user-friendly management console, display all the control circuits for the building, power, lighting, water and safety & security systems. For example, the Siemens’ security management concept can integrate all failure messages in a single platform. All smoke and motion detectors, emergency call facilities and other sensors are networked via cameras and monitors. A single platform integrates numerous subsystems which can come from different manufacturers which are operated differently, simplifying operation for security personnel. The system can inform the security services of any malfunctions and indicates the quickest route to the problem area. Siemens provides also the entire security system for the police, featuring video surveillance system in order to monitor the inside and outside of the stadium from a control center.
