Kenyan Prime Minister Raila Odinga said Sunday that Nile basin nation would never threaten Egypt's water interests. He made these remarks after his country became the fifth to ink a water-sharing pact opposed by Egypt.
Odinga "made clear" during a meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak that "his country and other Nile basin states could not and will not think of harming Egypt's water interests," presidential spokesman Suleiman Awad said, according to Reuters.
The new pact was signed by Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda for what is said to be an equitable sharing of the Nile's waters, despite strong opposition from Egypt and Sudan which currently enjoy the lion's share of the river.
